A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Deuteronomy 30:11-20

This passage offers a profound reflection on the relationship between humanity and God. It reminds us that God's commands and instructions are not distant or unattainable, but rather within our reach. The passage emphasizes the importance of choice and personal responsibility, as it presents life and death, blessing and curse as options before us. It encourages us to choose life, to love and obey God, knowing that our decisions have consequences for ourselves and future generations. This reflection underscores the significance of faith, obedience, and the enduring presence of God's word in guiding us towards a life filled with purpose, blessings, and a deep connection with our Creator.

  1. Reflect on your personal relationship with God. How would you describe this relationship to another person?

  2. Have you ever felt like God was distant or unattainable? What made you feel this way? What does the Bible teach on this topic?

  3. Is life and death a choice? Explain why you think the way you do.

  4. In what way have your personal choices impacted the next generation?

  5. How important is God’s word in shaping your understanding of morality and ethics?

2 Corinthians 11:1-21a

This passage unveils the Apostle Paul's vulnerability and determination to protect the Corinthians from false teachers. His words reveal his deep love for the church and his concern for their spiritual well-being. The passage highlights the contrast between the sincerity of Paul's ministry and the deceitfulness of those who seek to exploit and mislead. It serves as a reminder that even within the church, we must discern truth from falsehood and remain vigilant against misleading doctrines. Paul's example inspires us to stand firm in our faith, defend the Gospel, and prioritize the integrity of our spiritual lives above personal gain or popularity.

  1. Does truth exist? How can we know what is true and what is false?

  2. In what way have you made yourself vulnerable in an attempt to protect and defend the truth?

  3. Does mainstream media exploit and mislead people or does it uncover and reveal the truth? Explain.

  4. Define the term ‘doctrine’. Are there misleading doctrines that permeate the church today? Name one doctrine that you feel stands the test of time and serves as the foundation of the church. Why choose this particular doctrine?

  5. What does it mean to stand firm in the Christian faith?

Luke 19:1-10

In this passage we observe a transformative encounter between Jesus and Zacchaeus, the tax collector. The passage portrays the power of grace and redemption as Jesus not only sees Zacchaeus but chooses to dine with him, breaking societal norms. Zacchaeus's encounter with Jesus results in a radical change of heart, leading to repentance and the desire to make amends for his past wrongdoings. This passage reminds us of Jesus's mission to seek and save the lost, regardless of their reputation or social status. It teaches us that no one is beyond the reach of God's love and mercy, and that genuine repentance has the power to transform lives.

  1. Describe a transformative encounter that you had with another person recently? What was so transformative about it?

  2. Name one societal norm that should be broken. Name one societal norm that should remain unchanged. How do you go about deciding what societal norms to break or maintain?

  3. What mistake have you made in the past for which you have repented and made amends for? What did you learn from this mistake?

  4. Is anyone beyond the reach of God’s love and mercy? Explain.

  5. Name one enemy whom you have not only prayed for but also chosen to love.

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
