A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Ezekiel 4:1-17

This passage portrays a vivid and symbolic depiction of the prophet's obedience to God's commands. As we reflect on these verses, we are struck by the profound message of commitment and sacrifice. Through the actions of building a miniature model of Jerusalem's siege and lying on his side for an extended period, Ezekiel demonstrates his unwavering faith and willingness to bear the burdens of his people. This passage reminds us of the importance of obedience to God's calling, even when it requires discomfort or unconventional actions. It encourages us to ponder how we can wholeheartedly serve and fulfill God's purposes, regardless of the challenges that may arise.

  1. Which of God’s commands is hardest for you to follow and why?

  2. Describe a recent experience where you modeled commitment and sacrifice to a cause bigger than yourself.

  3. Does your faith ever waver? Why or why not?

  4. Have you ever found obedience to God to be uncomfortable or unconventional? Explain.

  5. What challenge do you currently face that is making it hard for you to stay positive?

Luke 9:51-62

This passage presents a powerful message about the cost of discipleship. In this passage, Jesus sets his face towards Jerusalem, resolute in fulfilling his mission despite opposition. He challenges potential followers to prioritize their commitment to him above all else, even familial ties and personal comfort. As we reflect on these verses, we are confronted with the need for radical devotion and unwavering dedication to Christ. It reminds us that being a disciple requires sacrifice, selflessness, and wholehearted surrender. It prompts us to examine our own priorities and willingness to let go of anything that hinders our complete obedience to Christ's call.

  1. Explain the phrase: “cost of discipleship.”

  2. Think of a time when you faced opposition. What helped you move forward despite the opposition?

  3. Is it fair to expect people to prioritize Jesus over familial ties and personal comfort? Why or why not?

  4. Would you describe your relationship with Jesus Chirst as a form of “radical devotion?” Why or why not?

  5. What is hindering your complete obedience to Christ?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
