A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Deuteronomy 4:32-40

This passage reminds us of the greatness and faithfulness of God. It speaks of the uniqueness of the Israelites' relationship with Him and the wonders He performed in their midst. As I reflect on these verses, I am struck by the invitation to ponder and consider the past acts of God, recognizing His sovereignty and power. It is a call to remember His commandments and to pass them on to future generations. This passage encourages us to embrace a deep sense of awe and reverence for God, to be grateful for His love and guidance, and to faithfully follow His ways in our life.

  1. Give an example of how you have experienced God’s greatness and faithfulness in your life.

  2. What is something wonderful and amazing that you have done for someone else?

  3. In what area of your life do you find it difficult to hand over control to God?

  4. Name one person, other than family, whom you have taken under your wings to mentor?

  5. Name three people who currently guide and shape your thoughts, words and deeds? What about these people gives them such authority over your life?

2 Corinthians 3:1-18

This passage unveils the transformative power of the Spirit and the ministry of the new covenant. Paul emphasizes the letter of recommendation written on the hearts of believers, demonstrating that their transformed lives are a testament to the work of God's Spirit. The passage contrasts the fading glory of the old covenant with the surpassing glory of the new covenant, which brings freedom and unveils the true nature of God. As we reflect on these verses, we are reminded of the importance of surrendering to the Holy Spirit's work in our life, allowing Him to mold and shape us into a living testament of God's grace and love. It is through the Spirit's work that we are enabled to reflect the glory of Christ and walk in righteousness, being transformed into His likeness day by day.

  1. What new and transformative thing is taking place in your life?

  2. Name one person you do not get along with. If this person was to write a letter of recommendation about you, then what pros and cons would they write about you?

  3. What proof is there that you are doing the work of God’s Spirit?

  4. Have your desires and wants changed over time? Why have your desires and wants remained the same or changed over time? What might this suggest about you?

  5. Have you always been graceful and loving towards others? Explain your answer.

Luke 16:1-9

This passage presents the parable of the dishonest manager, which offers valuable lessons on stewardship and shrewdness. It tells the story of a manager who, faced with impending job loss, uses his position to secure future provisions by reducing the debts owed to his master. Jesus commends the manager's resourcefulness, highlighting the importance of wisely utilizing worldly wealth for eternal purposes. This passage challenges me to examine my own stewardship, encouraging me to be diligent and intentional in managing the resources and opportunities entrusted to me. It reminds me to prioritize heavenly treasures, using my earthly possessions to build relationships, bless others, and advance the kingdom of God.

  1. In the passage above, would you agree or disagree that the dishonest manager was an example of stewardship and shrewdness? Explain.

  2. What steps are you taking to secure your future?

  3. Is there a connection between temporal resources and eternal rewards? If so, then what is the connection?

  4. Reflect on the opportunities that have been presented to you over the course of your life. How have you missed out on these opportunities? How have you made the most of these opportunities?

  5. Rank, in order of ‘hours spent’, how you typically spend a 24 hour day. Would you reprioritize the way you spend your time? How and why?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
