A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Wisdom 4:16-5:8

This passage calls us to reflect on the fleeting nature of human life and the importance of seeking wisdom and righteousness in order to experience a blessed life. It underscores the reality that the righteous who have died live on in eternal peace, while the wicked are tormented by their own conscience even before they die. The passage challenges us to prioritize the eternal over the temporal even though such a purposeful life may lead to us being persecuted by those who are consumed by fleshly desires. The righteous trust in God and remain steadfast in their beliefs.

  1. Reflect on the fleeting nature of your life. How does the fragile nature of life affect how you approach life?

  2. What is the key to experiencing the blessings of life?

  3. If you had to choose, would you rather have a few years of living in peace or many years of living tormented by your own conscience? Explain why you prefer one over the other.

  4. What are some examples of eternal goals? Name two eternal goals that you want to specifically focus on going forward. In what way are temporal pressures keeping you from reaching those goals?

  5. How might our trust in God help us remain steadfast in living our best life now?

Colossians 1:24-2:7

In this passage the Apostle Paul speaks of the great mystery of Christ, which is the hope of glory for all believers. Paul is able to rejoice in his sufferings because he keeps Christ at the center. He emphasizes the importance of Christ's sufferings and how they are ultimately for the benefit of the church. In Christ we are encouraged and united in love. Paul urges the Colossians to remain rooted in Christ who is the head of the church. He encourages them to be built up in faith so as not to be deceived by false teachings.

  1. What is the mystery of Christ? How does this mystery bring us hope?

  2. Is it possible to rejoice in the midst of suffering? Why or why not?

  3. How are you blessed by the suffering of Christ?

  4. What is the key to uniting the world in love?

  5. In what practical way does your faith community build up your faith?

Luke 6:27-38

In this passage Jesus urges his followers to love their enemies, do good to those who hate them, bless those who curse them, and pray for those who mistreat them. Jesus calls his followers to embrace a radical form of love, which goes beyond mere reciprocity and embraces a selfless love for all. He also emphasizes the importance of non-judgmental attitudes and a willingness to forgive, just as God has forgiven us. This passage is a powerful reminder of the transformative nature of love and forgiveness and the potential for it to break down barriers and transform relationships. It challenges us to live in a way that is radically different from the prevailing culture of our world.

  1. Name someone who you would consider to be your enemy. How have you shown love to them in the past? What can you do today to let them know that you love them?

  2. Would you describe your love for others as radical or reciprocal? Explain.

  3. Is “forgiving” someone and “forgetting” how they hurt the same thing? Why or why not? Are Christians supposed to “forgive” and “forget”? Explain.

  4. What is the key to breaking down barriers that divide us?

  5. Is your approach to the world the same or different in comparison to a non-believer? What might this say about your spiritual identity?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
