A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Wisdom 14:27-15:3

The passage argues that idol worship is the root cause of all evil. People tend to boast about their idols, make false claims to defend them, and even corrupt their morality to excuse them. They also resort to outright lying to cover up the harm caused by their idols. Such actions are a result of misplaced trust, where idol worshipers swear by their idols and pledge allegiance to them, expecting no harm. However, tragedy inevitably strikes, as they abandon the true God for a false one and trade a life of holiness for one of hell. When we cast away their idols and turn to God, our life will reflect a spirit of kindness, patience, and mercy to others. Such a life is hard to live and we are bound to make mistakes on occasion. In those times, we can rest assured that the love of God never fails, that God forgives us, and that we belong to Him forever. Those who worship God will walk the path of righteousness and receive eternal life.

  1. We all have idols in our life that compete with God. What would you say are the top 3 idols in your life that keep you from fully surrendering to God?

  2. Take one of the idols listed above and describe a time when you boasted about the idol, made a false claim to defend it, compromised your morality to excuse it, or even outright lied to cover up the harm caused by your idol.

  3. What tragedy has occurred because of your love for the idol?

  4. In what area of your life have you traded away a life of holiness for a life of hell?

  5. How can we know if we have fully surrendered to God?

  6. What assurance do we have when we have surrendered our life to God but fail on occasion?

Romans 14:1-12

This passage teaches us about the importance of respecting and accepting the differences in beliefs and practices among believers. The passage emphasizes that we should not judge or condemn those whose opinions differ from ours, as everyone is accountable only to God. It urges us to prioritize love and harmony above our personal preferences, recognizing that our actions should not cause others to stumble in their faith. Ultimately, the passage reminds us that we will all stand before God and be held accountable for our actions and attitudes. Therefore, we should seek to live in peace and unity, recognizing that we are all part of one body of Christ, regardless of our individual differences.

  1. Should all believers believe the same things and practice the same way?

  2. Think of someone whose beliefs and practices are different from yours. How have you shown respect and acceptance to that person?

  3. When have you judged or condemned someone whose beliefs and practices were different from yours? What was their response?

  4. Is there a greater priority than our personal preferences? If so, then what is that greater priority?

  5. Would you be confident or nervous to give an account to God of your actions and attitudes? Why would you be confident or nervous?

  6. What is the key to living in peace and unity with those around you?

Luke 8:26-39

This passage recounts the story of Jesus healing a man possessed by many demons. The passage demonstrates Jesus' power over evil and his compassion for those who are suffering. It also highlights the transformative power of Jesus' love and healing, as the formerly possessed man is restored to his right mind and becomes a witness to Jesus' power. The story challenges us to confront our own fears and prejudices, recognizing that even the most marginalized and troubled individuals are worthy of compassion and healing. It reminds us that through our faith in Jesus, we too can overcome our struggles and become witnesses to his transformative power in the world.

  1. Do you believe in the existence of demons? Why or why not?

  2. How has Jesus’ power transformed your life? Be specific.

  3. Describe a time when you shared your testimony in front of your faith community or friends. What was that sharing experience like for you and for those who listened to your testimony?

  4. Have you ever seen someone transition from being possessed by a demon to becoming filled with Jesus’ power? What were your thoughts before and after that experience?

  5. Name one prejudice that you struggle with the most and why?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
