A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Wisdom 13:1-9

This passage addresses the foolishness of nature worship. It warns us about the danger of forgetting about the Creator while praising the creation. The foolish believe that the forces of nature rule the world but the wise place their trust in the Lord of all creation. The truth is that God is the author of beauty. If we are amazed at the power and working of creation, then let us perceive from creation how much more powerful the Creator is. It can be argued that some go astray while truly seeking God and desiring to find him. Such people keep searching, and they trust in what they see, because the things that are seen are beautiful. However, we must realize that even creation praises the Lord of all creation.

  1. Go on a 10 minute silent walk in a garden or trail just to appreciate nature. During the walk, make note of the ways in which nature engages your senses. What do you see, hear, smell, touch, and taste?

  2. In what way does soil, wind, rain, and fire have power? How is each of these powers constructive and destructive?

  3. What amazes you most about the power and working of creation?

  4. Where did creation come from? Explain why you think this.

  5. What is the difference between nature worship and worshiping the Lord of all creation?

Romans 13:1-14

This passage discusses the role of government and the importance of obeying authority. The passage highlights that God has established all authority, and therefore, resisting authority is equivalent to resisting God himself. The passage encourages Christians to submit to governing authorities and to fulfill their duties as law-abiding citizens. However, it is also important to note that the passage does not suggest blind obedience to government, but rather, obedience within the confines of God's moral law. Overall, this passage emphasizes the importance of respecting and obeying governing authorities while also prioritizing one's obedience to God and his moral law.

  1. What is the role of government?

  2. Should we obey governing authorities? Why or why not?

  3. Do you believe that resisting authority is equivalent to resisting God himself? Why or why not?

  4. What amount of influence, if any at all, should religion have on laws that govern our land? Explain why you feel this way.

  5. What laws should the government implement to address the rise in mass shootings? Does your answer align with or go against God’s moral law? Explain.

Luke 8:16-25

This passage highlights the power and authority of Jesus Christ over nature. In this passage, Jesus calms a storm that was raging on the sea and demonstrates his power over the forces of nature. The passage also reveals the faith and trust of the disciples in Jesus as they turn to him in their time of need and witness his miraculous power. As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded that Jesus has power over all things, including the storms of our lives. It challenges us to have faith in his authority and trust in his ability to bring calmness to our storms, no matter how difficult they may seem.

  1. In what way does Jesus Christ have power and authority over nature?

  2. Do you believe that Jesus literally calmed the raging storm? Why or why not?

  3. Describe a time when you witnessed a miracle take place? How did this miracle help or hinder your faith?

  4. What storm is in your life currently that causes you to be afraid and anxious? What role does Jesus play in this storm?

  5. Do you have faith and trust in Jesus to calm the storms in your life and/or to get you through the storms? Why or why not?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
