A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Job 23:1-12

This is a powerful passage that speaks to the human struggle of feeling alone in the midst of suffering. Job, a righteous man who has lost everything, cries out to God, seeking to understand why he is enduring such hardships. Despite his feeling of abandonment, Job holds onto his faith and longs to stand before God to plead his case. This passage reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we can turn to God for comfort and hope. It also reminds us that the journey of faith is not always easy, but that our trust in God can sustain us through even the most difficult trials.

  1. Describe a time when you felt alone in the midst of your suffering.

  2. What event has occurred in your life (past or present) where you felt like your world was completely falling apart? How did you respond to that situation?

  3. Why do bad things seem to happen to good people?

  4. How does your faith in Jesus bring you confidence in the midst of crisis?

  5. Describe a time when you comforted someone or renewed their hope?

John 1:43-51

This is a beautiful passage that illustrates the power of personal invitation and the transformative nature of encountering Jesus. Philip, upon being called by Jesus, goes and invites Nathanael to come and see the Messiah. Nathanael is skeptical at first, but upon meeting Jesus, he is immediately convinced of his divine nature. Jesus sees Nathanael's heart and reveals his knowledge of him, which leads Nathanael to declare his faith in Jesus. This passage reminds us that our personal encounters with Jesus can transform us and deepen our faith. It also highlights the importance of sharing our faith with others and inviting them to encounter Jesus for themselves.

  1. When was the first time that you remember being invited to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? How did that experience transform your life?

  2. Do you think God is angry with those who are skeptical about their faith? Why or why not?

  3. What is your understanding about the divine nature of Jesus? Are you divine? Explain.

  4. Does your heart bring clarity or confusion to your mind? Explain.

  5. Describe a time when you shared your faith with someone else and invited them to encounter Jesus? What might this say about the purpose that drives your life?

Proverbs 4:7-18

This passage is a powerful reminder of the value of wisdom and the importance of pursuing it with diligence. The passage encourages us to hold onto wisdom tightly and to make it a priority in our lives, recognizing that it is more valuable than any earthly treasure. The author also warns against the dangers of wickedness and the paths that lead us away from wisdom. This passage teaches us that true success and fulfillment come from living a life grounded in wisdom and righteousness. It challenges us to constantly seek wisdom, allowing it to guide our decisions and actions, and to avoid the paths of darkness that lead to destruction.

  1. What is wisdom?

  2. Where does wisdom come from?

  3. Is the search for wisdom a priority or after-thought in your life? Why?

  4. Would you describe your life as successful or unsuccessful? Explain.

  5. Describe a time in your life when you were headed down a path of darkness, destruction and despair. What helped you turn around and head toward the light?

John 12:20-26

This is a powerful passage that challenges us to examine our priorities and motivations in life. Jesus speaks of his impending death and explains that it is necessary for him to die so that he may bear much fruit. He then encourages his listeners to follow his example, to lay down their lives for his sake and the sake of the Gospel. This passage reminds us that true life and purpose come from surrendering ourselves to God and living for his glory. It challenges us to let go of our own ambitions and desires and to instead embrace the call to self-sacrifice and service.

  1. What truly motivates you?

  2. Do you consider it taboo to speak about your own death before it is imminent?

  3. Why was it necessary for Jesus to die?

  4. Do you embrace or shun death? Why

  5. How does surrendering ourselves to God help us?

  6. Name one person who has truly inspired you by their self-sacrifice and service? Why does this person inspire you? Have you let them know how much they inspire you?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
