A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Daniel 5:13-30

This passage tells the story of Belshazzar, the king of Babylon, who throws a lavish banquet and uses the sacred vessels from the Temple in Jerusalem to drink wine with his lords, wives, and concubines. As they celebrate, a hand appears and writes a mysterious message on the wall. No one can decipher the writing, and the king is filled with terror.

Belshazzar sends for Daniel, who interprets the message as a warning of the king's impending downfall and the end of his kingdom. That very night, Belshazzar is killed, and the kingdom is given to the Medes and Persians.

The story of Belshazzar is a cautionary tale about the dangers of arrogance and disrespecting the sacred. Belshazzar's misuse of the sacred vessels and his lack of reverence for God's holy things leads to his downfall. Daniel's interpretation of the writing on the wall shows the importance of being faithful to God and seeking his wisdom and guidance.

The story also serves as a reminder that God is in control and that those who do not honor him will eventually face judgment. Belshazzar's pride and arrogance led to his destruction, but Daniel's faithfulness and wisdom brought him favor and success.

1 John 5:13-21

This passage emphasizes the assurance of salvation and the importance of living in obedience to God. The author of this letter, believed to be the apostle John, writes to encourage believers to have confidence in their faith and to live a life pleasing to God.

In verse 13, John states that he has written these things to those who believe in the name of the Son of God so that they may know they have eternal life. This assurance of salvation is based on the fact that believers have put their faith in Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

John goes on to emphasize the importance of prayer, obedience, and staying away from sin. He reminds us that we have confidence in God when we ask for things that are in accordance with His will, and that we can have assurance that we belong to God when we obey His commands.

John also warns against idolatry and reminds us to keep ourselves from anything that is contrary to God's commands. He emphasizes that we are in a constant battle against the forces of evil and that we must remain vigilant and grounded in our faith.

  1. Are you sure of your salvation? Why or why not?

  2. How confident are you in your Christian faith?

  3. Does your faith and works align? Give an example.

  4. In what way does the Holy Scriptures help or hinder your faith?

  5. In what sense is Jesus the Savior of the world?

  6. How many times do you pray on a daily basis? How do you pray?

  7. What gives you confidence that God will give you what you ask for?

Luke 5:1-11

This passage tells the story of Jesus calling his first disciples, Simon Peter, James, and John, while they were out fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had been preaching to the crowds by the lake and had even used Simon Peter's boat as a platform to do so. After Jesus had finished speaking, he told Simon to go out into the deeper waters and let down his nets for a catch, despite Simon's earlier unsuccessful attempts.

Simon initially objected, citing their lack of success earlier in the day, but eventually obeyed Jesus. To Simon's amazement, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. This miracle caused Simon to realize that Jesus was no ordinary man and that he was in the presence of someone with divine power. Simon and his partners then left everything behind to follow Jesus.

The story of the miraculous catch of fish is often interpreted as a metaphor for evangelism, as Jesus called his disciples to be "fishers of men." It is also a powerful demonstration of the authority of Jesus and his power over creation. The obedience of Simon Peter in following Jesus' commands, even when it seemed impractical, is an important lesson for all Christians today.

  1. Have you ever been called to do something great while you were in the midst of doing something mundane?

  2. How does the disciples being called by Jesus resonate with you?

  3. What crazy thing have you reluctantly done simply because you were trying to be respectful to someone else’s wishes?

  4. Describe an extraordinary experience that you encountered while going about your ordinary life?

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
