GOD ON MUTE

How am I going to get through this?

“And he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.’ … He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.’” - Mark 14:34,36

Day 8: Making the Ask

Pause

“For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken” - Psalm 62:506

Reflect

  • Bible: “‘When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” - Matthew 6:7-8

  • Book: “The great theologian Karl Barth said that true prayer is primarily very simple. ‘In the first instance, it is an asking,” he said. This is reassuring for those of us who struggle to issue anything more than six-year old ‘Dear God’ type requests when we are under intense pressure.” (p.25)

Ask

  • Do your prayers ever feel like they do not work?

  • What different ways of praying have you tried?

  • What prayer style works best for you?

  • Would you describe your prayer style as complex or simple in language / short or long in duration?

The hymn of surrender, “All to Jesus,” by Judson W. Van DeVenter

All to Jesus, I surrender

All to Him I freely give

I will ever love and trust Him

In His presence daily live

I surrender all, I surrender all

All to Thee my blessed Savior

I surrender all.

Amen.
