A Reflection on the Daily Office Readings

Genesis 16:1-14

In this passage Sarai uses her slave-girl Hagar to satisfy her own selfish desires, and then deals harshly with Hagar when Sarai’s needs have been met. Have you ever acted like Sarai and taken advantage of someone for your personal gain? Have you ever found yourself in the position of Hagar - being thrown to the curb after having been taken advantage of? Unfortunately, such adversity is quite common. What helps us find strength to stand fast in adversity? We are told that the angel of the Lord found Hagar by a spring of water in the wilderness and said to her, "I will so greatly multiply your offspring that they cannot be counted for multitude. … Now you have conceived and shall bear a son; you shall call him Ishmael, for the Lord has given heed to your affliction.” God gives us confidence in the midst of our despair that enables us to endure hardship and persevere in living a godly and righteous life.

Hebrews 9:15-28

Where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must occur before the will is executed. Similarly, For God’s will to be executed, the death of Christ had to occur. God’s will was to remove sin and this required the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross of Calvary. Christ will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. What is God’s will for our life and what sacrifices are being called to make? How might we better prepare ourselves and others for Christ’s second coming as we face the struggles and adversity of this world?

John 5:19-29

Just as God the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also Christ gives life to whomever he wishes. Anyone who hears God’s word, believes God promises, and obeys God directives has passed from death to life. Whatever crisis you might find yourself in today, seek God’s guidance, and push forward. God who raised the dead and gives them life will surely help you overcome.

To God be the glory now and forever. Amen.
